I had heard about seeing elephant seals at Point Reyes.  I had to investigate.  Sure enough, big males and pups where there laying on the beach.  Watching them was like watching paint dry.  But the outstanding docent volunteers explained the life of the seals and made the visit memorable.  I will go back if I’m ever in the area.

Elephant seal pups

One of the fascinating facts is that the mothers give birth and nurse their pups for a month and then leave their pup.  There the pup lie on the beach for another month growing from nourishment gained during nursing.  Then they leave.  Last winter was rough on the pups.  About a hundred died when a storm came associated with a high tide and pups were washed out into the bay and drowned.
