My last night camping was where I began – at Long Lake. Same view as before. It was Friday night and I heard music coming from across the lake where a group of friends were enjoying each other’s company. Their happiness made me smile.

When leaving east central Idaho, my general plan was to head south to the Snake River and then westward to see the eclipse in Oregon. I lack a story to tell, so the following is just a collection of photos from this portion of the trip.
Little City of Rocks is a fun diversion west of Highway 46.

To somewhat complete my investigation of east central Idaho, I drove to Highway 28. First on my todo list was to visit Skull Canyon mentioned in the Roadside Geology of Idaho. Skull Canyon showcases limestone about 325 million years old. You don’t have to like geology to find this canyon interesting.

After cleaning up in Mackay, I went to the Craters of the Moon National Monument to wait out the weather. It was cold and rainy. Dogs aren’t allowed on the trails there, but they are allowed on the road. Razzy and I walked the road with my wool cap and raincoat on. The plants stood out against the black volcanic rock.

Such magnificent views. I wanted to see the mines above Mackay, so I drove the Pass Creek Road westward. It was gorgeous and the view of the road below made me chuckle. Look closely in the photo below and you will see a yield sign by the intersection. Is the yield sign needed in the middle of nowhere?

After my failed attempt to see “the most beautiful spot in Idaho” I drove on looking for a home for the night. I could have stayed at my turn around spot, but I was looking for a better view. I was being picky. And I was also enjoying the view of the Little Lost River Valley. I chose the Summit Creek Campground for my home for the night. It was a nice campground, and I was lucky that there was an auto mechanic staying there.

I noticed on a map in the Roadside Geology of Idaho a reference to the “most beautiful spot in Idaho”. I laughed, that was a pretty bold statement, and I was intrigued. I stopped at the Challis BLM office to find out about the road conditions to the location. They thought I could drive there, but the man helping me admitted that it had been a number of years since he had been there.

I was getting into my new routine with the van and most of the time (not always) I remembered where I stored stuff. And being in such a small space I felt like I was stumbling over myself at time, but those times were getting less and less. And my dog and I were getting our system worked out. Thankfully she was learning to understand that she needed to jump off the bed/sofa when I wanted to change the function. The first couple of mornings when I wanted the change the bedroom to a living room/kitchen, she did her best to imitate a dead dog, not letting me easily change the bed to a sofa.

After a month at the City of Rocks and Castle Rocks, Idaho, it was time to hit the pavement and get home to Seattle.
Birds of Prey
I’ve never had a bad night camping in the many years I’ve been camping. The odds caught up with me; with my stay on the Snake River near the Swan Fall hydro power plant. It was a Sunday night; it should be a quite night – correct? I was tired of driving. I-84 throught Idaho was busy, boring, and hot; so I simply picked a camp site that look adaquate. I settled for camp site #1, which was very close to #2, #3, and #4 and a vaulted toilet. Not a good site, but it being Sunday night, I was sure it would be quiet.

Overlook view. My camp site was towards the top of the photo at the bend in the road.

I came to the City of Rocks and Castle Rocks for the month of May to volunteer with little understanding about what I would do except give tours of some sort. I had driven through the area about ten years ago and liked it. After a quick phone call and a check of my references, I was hired for the volunteer gig. I was sure all would turn out and it would be a happy month. How could it not be happy? I was going to where rocks are 2.5 billion years old.

The 2.5 billion years old rock.
