Cold, rainy, and snowy; that was yesterday morning. At the top of the City (Emery Pass) I heard there was 4 inches of new snow in the morning. In the afternoon, the dogs and I got itchy feet and headed up into the City. Up I drove and found it snowing. I had a hat and my hood on my head trying to keep out the bitter cold wind. And then… I was rewarded for my effort to see the City; the sun started shining, the air was clear, the wind died, and few people were in the City. I felt like I had the entire City to myself; to slowly explore the nooks and crannies. It was special. Here are some photos from yesterday.

The quiet Yost Cemetery sign beckoned to me to turn in and visit. Perhaps I would hear old stories whispering in the wind. I did not anticipate the real stories I would soon hear.

Airway arrows are an obscure part of American aviation history. When I found that I would be joining the team at the City of Rocks I started looking around for interesting things to do in the area. I found that the Strevell Airway Arrow was nearby. For an explanation of airway arrows this web site has a pretty good description.
This arrow is located about 300 feet east of the intersection of old Highway 81 and the Strevell Road.

Here are some random pictures from around the City of Rocks and Castle Rocks area.
2.5 billion years ago we could not breath the atmosphere; it was toxic to humans. Life was bacteria.

I’m touching rock that is 2.5 billion years old.

One of my volunteer tasks is to explain the California Trail and share information. What I explain is that the trip was an arduous undertaking. Many made the trip and encountered death and personal losses. Others were lucky and only encountered an extreme physical adventure.
Daniel Tickner recorded his name on Register Rock in the City of Rocks while making a trip. Research has uncovered his unusual story of crossing the land on the California Trail three times.

This trip is to Montana. I had planned to take this trip a year ago, but with significant forest fires last year in Montana I went to the Owyhees instead. This year I visit Montana!
The first day was spent driving. Not really vacation time – it was driving time. I stopped for the night at Rose Lake Sportsman Access in Idaho. A simple quiet place to spend the night.

Loving my trip to Utah in 2014, I decided to head back to see more of the incredible sights. In plotting my path to Utah I identified a campground at the Curlew National Grasslands by Snowville, Utah that seemed like a good location to spend a night. It turned out the stop was better than good, it was wonderful. The summer’s campground host and I (plus three dogs) were the only ones there that night enjoying the open view and wildlife. Big open sky in a quite area. The simple campground is a green oasis on Stone Reservoir surrounded by 360 degrees of long views which put a smile on the face of this western Washington city girl.

I’d planned and researched about everything one can find on the internet regarding visiting Utah and now I’m off starting on my trip. I left work early to get the final loading of the trailer done with the goal of leaving by 7:00 that night. If I left by 7:00 I could make it to a state park in Yakima and not arrive too late in the evening. However, 7:00 came and I wasn’t ready to leave. Although I was still at home, I opened a beer to toast the beginning of my too-cool-to-be-defined vacation. I was going to see some of the coolest geology. Continue reading
