A rather slow day today. Rain/snow were forecast. In this area dirt roads turn to gumbo when wet. In the morning I saw rain showers in the distant. It looked like I could make it to Jordan Crater and back before the rains started. Off I went.

I moved from camping at Succor Creek to camping at the Antelope Reservoir a bit west of Jordan Valley. A free campground with a total of four spaces. Three of the spaces are by the restroom and a fourth a bit further down the road. A nice place with big sky views.

I had read that the Owyhees was rattlesnake country. One of the hunters I talked with didn’t bring his hunting dog with him because of the snakes. Another group had all their dogs given the rattlesnake vaccine. I took this chatter as a serious warning. Rocket would have to stay on a leash.
On our walk up Juniper Gulch we fortunately saw no snakes. The next day I walked up the Sage Creek track.

Before my next stop, a surprise leak in the trailer had to be dealt with. Water dripping outside the trailer was what I saw when I reached my brother’s. Darn. I dealt with it by draining the water tank and released the pressure from the water system. I grabbed a beer and decided to ignore the problem, I could deal with it later. Today was later, and I had to deal with the problem.

It was a long day driving from Tooele, Utah to the Farewell Bend campground in Oregon. Four states in one day. I pulled into the campground about a half hour before sunset. The pictures below are a view of the winter camping area. An area with more mature trees was closed for the season.
Not much else to write. It was a good functional spot to spend the night. I was back on the road early the next morning driving home.

Those that have read my blog posts on camping sites know that I do not frequent established campgrounds. But life is full of unanticipated twists and turns. I found myself wanting a simple January vacation this year. A vacation where I didn’t have to make a lot of decisions like where to camp, where to find food, and what to do each day. So I decided to volunteer where I would have limited decisions to make. For the month of January I was a docent at the Heceta Head lighthouse. In exchange for volunteering as a docent I received free camping in the Carl Washburne campground with all hookups. The first time I have “camped” with complete hookups. Kind of glamping not camping.

The weather was to improve today with rain showers throughout the day instead of unrelenting rain. I headed south to explore with the sand dunes a constant feature the entire coast line.

Seems as an afterthought that the more traditional St.Mary was added.

It is never a goal to camp in a gravel pit, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. My family must have camped in gravel pits when I was a kid, because it seems quite natural to me to use a gravel pit as a home for the night. But not everyone was raised like I was. On Labor Day weekend I was heading home with my friend Jan. We were focusing on getting home, no longer in the vacationing mode. We were in Fields, Oregon about 6 PM and were starting to think about where we would spend the night. I thought the BLM Page Spring campground an hour north may be full since it was a holiday weekend. I asked at Fields if they could recommend a place we could pull over for the night. Sure, there was a gravel pit a couple of miles north. A couple planned to go target shooting there that night, but we were not to worry, they were a nice couple. Sounded great to me.

My trip plans were turned upside down with an early winter cold front coming through eastern Oregon. Low clouds and three days of rain in the valleys and snow at the top of the Steens. I saw a pickup truck with globs of mud everywhere, a warning to not travel on dirt (now muddy) roads. My planned backroad travels had to be canceled. Unsure of what to do; with choices of staying at the Page Spring Campground or traveling north, south, east or west; I went to eat breakfast at the Frenchglen Hotel. Not surprisingly the restaurant was full of people just like me, mulling over what to do. Swapping stories about where we had been, one couple sang the praise of the Owyhee River and the Lake Owyhee State Park campground. With paved roads the entire way, that was where I chose to go next and I was glad I did.
